Mel's Hole

Mel's Hole

In 1997, Mel Waters sent a fax to radio host Art Bell.  Mel described a hole in his hometown of Ellensburg, Washington on the Manastash Ridge that seemed to have no bottom.  The fax was read on the air and Mel was contacted for an interview.

The Story:

Washington native, Mel Waters, owned a piece of property with an unusual feature: a 9-foot in diameter Bottom-less Pit. Locals for ages have thrown trash into the hole. Dead cows, Tires, and TV tubes (Mel's favorite) are just a few of the items thrown into the pit.

But the hole never filled up.

This sparked Mel's curiosity and he decided to test the depth of the hole on his property. Mel was a self-described professional shark fisherman, so he began lowering fishing line into the hole. The line was weighted with a one-pound triangular weight. Wondering if there is water at the bottom, he ties on some life-saver candies which would dissolve in the theoretical water. Mel let 4500 feet worth of fishing line into the hole, reeled it up, but the life-savers were not dissolved!

Apparently the hole is deeper than 4500 feet.

Mel continued to let line down into the hole. He bought spool after spool and at one point had 80,000 feet of line hooked to an outrigger in the hole. Callers to Art's show questioned whether the line was snagged on the side of the pit but Mel weighed the line and it weighed around 18 pounds, which indicated the line was suspended. A lot of line was suspended!

A little bit about the hole:
The hole is 9 feet in diameter with a stone inner wall turning into dirt and is covered with a metal covering.  Mel kept the hole closed often because of it's nature as an "attractive nuisance."

Reincarnated Dogs and Black Beams:

The Infamous Black Beam of Mel's Hole

Not only is the hole very very deep but it also has paranormal properties as described by Mel.  Mel spoke of a hunter who's hunting dog died and the body of the dog was thrown into the hole.  The dog appeared in town the next day!

Mel also spoke of a neighbor who witnessed a black beam "shining" out of the hole towards the sky.  The neighbor described the light (says Mel) as being "blacker than black."  Apparently, even in pure darkness, the black light can be seen!

Mel believed so much in the power of the hole that he put in his will that he was to be thrown, "irreverently dropped," into the hole when he died.  Art questioned whether Mel was every "drawn" towards the hole insinuating suicide.  Mel said he was not.

The Military Steps In:

About one week after the first interview on Coast to Coast AM, Mel calls Art Bell again but this time he was extremely nervous.  According to Mel, he was going to check on his property and was more interested in the hole because of the previous Art Bell interview.  While trying to enter his property, he was stopped by a military checkpoint.  They forbid him from entering his own land because of a supposed plane crash on the site.  Mel reported absolutely no smoke or any other indication of a plane crash.  Even small events make headlines in the small town so a plane crash would have been really big news.

Why would the military be interested in the land?

Perhaps, it's the depth of the hole itself.  The government desparetly needs a location for spend fuel rods and other radioactive materials.  A bottomless pit would be ideal!
Or maybe it's the paranormal properties of the hole that they find most interesting.  Time travel and resurrection would be most helpful in military applications...one would think.

The military went so far to keep the hole secret that it was blocked from Terraserver.  As shown below, a white box covers what should be Mel's property.

Ellensburg is supposedly an odd town.  Mel speaks of a whale bone in a tree which shouldn't be there since Ellensberg is not close to the ocean.
